Ten recs in fandoms I don't normally read. Jun. 25th, 2007 @ 08:04 pm
I was fandom-monogamous for a while, but over the last year or two I've learned to dip my toes in other waters. These are some of the things I've found.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Home is... by [info]dharmavati. I like the movies okay, but not enough to dig into the fandom. But then I saw a rec for Tia Dalma/Davy Jones, and my curiosity got the better of me :) It's a really lovely story, and while it was written before AWE, it actually works with that movie pretty well.

Fullmetal Alchemist (anime): Good Intentions by [info]ladylisse. I remembered her from HP fandom, and I found the summary intriguing, so I figured I'd give it a try. And OMG. I had my issues with the anime series, but if it had been resolved like this, I might've liked it even more than the manga. It's the sort of story that leaves me laughing and crying at the same time, and it's the sort of story that I'm always trying to write.

Samurai Champloo: Treatise on the Price of Sugar in the Edo Period by [info]sintari. (Mugen/Fuu, btw.) What I really love about this fic is the description, of the surroundings, and of the characters' actions, and of Mugen's inner thoughts. It all comes together really well.

Silent Hill 2: Save Point: Hell is Repetition by Patrick Phelan. You don't actually have to know anything about Silent Hill to get this fic (I certainly don't); knowing about basic game mechanics is enough. Because game mechanics are what this story is really about, and it works *so* well.

Lord of the Rings: Thirteen Gifts for Thirteen Gardeners by Tulip Proudfoot. Towards the end of RotK, as Frodo is preparing to go to the West, he mentions the children that Sam and Rosie will someday have. This fic is set after Sam leaves; the children (now grown up) find a box with a letter and gift for each child. The characterization, fleshing out what we know of each character, is absolutely lovely, and the whole thing just has a very warm feeling. (There's some minor canon het, but the main focus is gen.)

Final Fantasy VII: Need by [info]continuum. Occasionally, people writing [info]1sentence-type fics will try to make each sentence part of a story; this is the only one I've ever seen where it actually *works*. I'm usually not that into slash either, but I like the Reno/Rude here.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Welcome to the Slaughterhouse by [info]beer_good_foamy. Rated NC-17 for violence; sometimes a gal's just in the mood for some over-the-top gore :) There's a bit of canon Willow/Tara too. Tara's family drags her back home; the Scoobies go after them, and, well... you can guess the rest. It's executed very well, though I think Buffy went down a little too fast for my tastes.

Beauty and the Beast (Disney): Picture This by TrudiRose. I think I kind of ship Gaston/Belle thanks to this fic; the romance is very believable, there are some awesome OCs once you get further in, and it was lots of fun spotting the places where events from the movie were mirrored. Belle's a bit offputting at the beginning, but this is addressed; the only quibble I had was that the triplets weren't rounded like the rest of the characters.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle: Wait For Me by Victoria Hughes. I tried looking for Sakura/Syaoran after reading TRC, but this was pretty much the only readable thing I could find. While it was written before the author got very far into the series, it doesn't really contradict anything. It meanders a bit more than I'd like, but the ending is spot-on perfect.

Avatar: Editing History by [info]v_voltaire. An incomplete selection of Avatars removed from the history books. This is why I love 100-word drabbles. Because when people get it right, they get it *really* right.

The only good thing about my bizarre vacation sleep schedule is that I probably dodged zombification by virtue of being asleep. When I woke up, my brother was already fortifying the basement. We've piled as much stuff up the stairs as we can... if nothing else, it'll be an early warning signal. Of course, there's also the door leading to the back yard, but it's kind of hard to get into our back yard, and plus we pushed all the stuff that's too heavy to go up the stairs against it. They don't seem to have noticed us yet... every once in a while we hear footsteps upstairs, but that's about it. We had CNN on mute, but the satellite went out a while ago. I hope it was just our dish they destroyed and not the actual station.

The bad thing is that my idiot brother left my kitty cat upstairs. He's scared of strange people, so I'm hoping none of the zombies found him... I think tonight I'll probably sneak upstairs and put some food out for him, and get some food for us too. Not going to try to get him, of course--I'm not that dumb.

Dunno where our parents are. My dad works in the middle of the city, too, and he rides the Metro in to work. I'm not saying anything about it to my brother, of course, but it's not looking too good.

Crap--lights just flickered, and the wireless died for a second, so I think they might be targeting the power lines. Anyway, I just wanted everybody to know that I'm okay... me and my brother will probably be able to ride this thing out as long as they don't wait too long to rescue us.

Title: Every Morning
Rating: G
Summary: It's never easy to move to a new place; Chad's first few weeks in Karakura Town are no exception. Gen, ~900 words.
Notes: Thank you to [info]shayheyred for looking it over!

Just a quick FYI for my flist:

I'm not planning to move at this time; if enough of my flist jumps I'll follow them, but that's not looking too likely unless LJ mass-bans [info]fandom_counts or something equally stupid.

I did make a GJ just in case, and I've had a journal at JF for a long time now. If/when GJ goes back up I'll hopefully start searching for/friending y'all there.

Since everyone's doing it...

Name one character from any fandom I know and I will give you three facts about them from my personal canon.

I'm not super happy with this story, but I figure it's about as good as it's going to get. Chad!fic soon, hopefully (which in my world will probably translate to a few weeks :/).

Title: If You Are Prepared
Author: [info]jetamors
Rating: PG? It’s not graphic, but maybe a bit icky.
Summary: Tousen and his sword figure some things out. Gen, ~700 words.
Notes: A sun is a traditional Japanese length measure, approximately 1.2 inches or 3 cm.

Never Forget
Prompt: Alphonse Elric and Winry Rockbell, Full Metal Alchemist, calendar

“Brother, wake up.”

Ed sat up blearily and rubbed his eyes. “Nnh? Why are you and Winry in my room?”

“Do you know what day it is?”

“March—no, April 1st, right?”

“And what did you promise us six years ago?” Winry asked.

Ed suddenly felt a sense of deep foreboding. “Um…”

“That if me and Al helped you pull a prank on our teacher, then you would do whatever we wanted every April 1st. Remember that?”

Ed turned to Al. “You broke my arm on purpose, didn’t you?”

Al practically smirked. “First, I want you to polish my helmet.”

Try
Prompt: Kakashi/Sasuke 'ribbon'

“I don’t want to kill you.”

Kakashi could remember watching Sasuke train at twelve, the way he twisted like a ribbon. The boy was older now, his movements more refined and much more brutal, but there were still traces of that ethereal grace. Still traces of the person he used to be.

“We won’t stop chasing you,” he said. “None of us will.”

“I know. But I can’t let you stop me.”

“Then you’ll have to kill me, won’t you?”

Sasuke looked away. “Don’t make me… I won’t…”

“Please, Sasuke.” Kakashi held out a hand. “Let me bring you home.”

So, uh, hi and stuff. I missed you guys.

I didn't do much writing over Lent, but yesterday was my LJ-versary (3 years, wow!), so if if you comment with a prompt and a pairing or set of characters in any fandom I'm familiar with, I'll write you at least 100 words.
» (No Subject)
I will update Yo Ho eventually; I wasn't in much of a writing mood for a while, and then starting last week grad school was all 'HI REMEMBER ME?' It's hard, though; the more engineering I do, the less funny I get, at least for the really tight stuff like this.

In the works: not much, for the aforementioned reasons. I've been writing the first draft of a longish, funny Team Gai fic on and off since, like, November; at some point I need to just sit down and finish it so I can start editing. I've written most of a fic about Chad coming to Karakura, but it's too short (~900 words), and plus I feel like it's just a retread of And Touch. I want to write Chad/Orihime, but in the story in my head, it'd basically be both of them getting over Ichigo's death (y'know, except for the part where he comes and pesters them for help in fighting Hollows every so often), which, again, And Touch. I feel like I'm in a rut where I can only write the same story over and over again. *sighs* I'd kind of wanted to write something Renji/Rukia, but I don't have a story for it.

Anyway, enough emo. Here's some really sweet Chad/Orihime Just Right, by [info]mistr3ssquickly, found through [info]bleach_anon. Why don't more people write this pairing? It's so insanely adorable.
» Falling Free
Hopefully I'll have the last chapter of Yo Ho up later this evening. But for now, have a bit of creepy Naruto fic.

Title: Falling Free
Fandom: Naruto
Rating: PG-13/R, for violence
Summary: Things fall apart. Gen, Shikamaru-centric. SPOILERS UP TO 338!
Notes: Written for [info]a_white_rain ^_^ It’s only about 600 words.

Title: Five Birthdays Rukia Never Celebrated (And One She Might)
Fandom: Bleach

Summary: Six drabbles, just like the title says. Rukia-centric, gen with a strong Renji/Rukia undercurrent.
Notes: Written for the Rukia's birthday celebration on [info]renji_rukia.

» The year in (fic) review
Grabbed from [info]gehayi. I didn't write anything the entire first half of this year (thanks, 19 credit hours!), but I was relatively prolific for the second half. My goal for 2007 is to post at least one chapter or one-shot every month.

Favorite story this year: Immaculate. I had been kicking the idea around for about a year, but when I worked out the betrayals, it all came together wonderfully.

My best story this year: And Touch. I wrestled with this story way too long to actually like it, but technically I think it's the best piece I've written yet.

Most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: It's early to say for sure, but I suspect Edge of the Blade won't get too far, seeing as how it's a genfic about two tertiary characters who never interact in canon.

Most fun story: A Pirate's Life for Me, definitely. It popped into my head almost verbatim late one night, and I had to get out of bed to write it down.

Sexiest story: I didn't post it on this journal, or even under my own name, but I did eventually out myself, so: Soi Fong/riding crop/Renji. It has no plot and makes no sense, but it's hot while it's doing... whatever it is that it's doing.

"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: After that Umbridge/Everybody fic I wrote in '04, I think the bar has been raised way too high. But Immaculate would probably qualify, as well as A Graveyard Outside Tandridge.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: Stories don't generally do this for me; if I don't have a strong perception of a character, I can't write them at all. AT did force me to think more about Luna and about the interaction between Hermione and Ginny. (Though I still fret about whether or not it was exactly right.)

Hardest story to do: And Touch, definitely. I had to make some major structural changes to my first draft, which included cutting a scene that I very much wanted to keep in. Angsting over this was what made me miss the [info]femgenficathon deadline.

Biggest disappointment: That AT was so horribly late, and that Beaky will never be part of a longer fic as I had once hoped.

Biggest surprise: Let the Rain Kiss You. I wrote it in about two days, just because the contest deadline got extended, and won the contest! Against porn!!

Most telling story: All of them. And Touch was about moving to a new place and starting my graduate degree. Immaculate was about my relationship with God. Yo Ho is about my pirate obsession ^_^. Let the Rain Kiss You and Edge of the Blade are both about how I connect (or fail to connect) with other people. Even if I don't consciously mean it to, everything I write is about me in some way.

A story I want remembered: Beaky. Because the world needs to know the truth of part-Veela!Snape.
» Edge of the Blade
1. I wrote a wee bit of Angelina/Fred for [info]angieweasley, if anyone's interested.

2.
Title: Edge of the Blade
Fandom: Bleach
Rating: PG
Summary: Their connection was unlikely, but strong. Tousen and Soi Fong spar, talk philosophy, and give each other bad advice. Gen.
Notes: As always, a big thank you to my beta, [info]shayheyred!

I think I'll celebrate my birthday like a hobbit this year. Give me a prompt and up to four characters (or a pairing, whatever), and I'll write you at least 100 words. Harry Potter, Bleach, Naruto... if there's another fandom you'd like, request it, and if I'm familiar with the canon I'll give it a shot.

(Also, I got a PS2 ^_^ What games should I get?)

» Pirates vs. Ninjas
Title: Pirates vs. Ninjas
Fandom: Bleach
Rating: G
Summary: Pirates vs. Ninjas. Yachiru vs. Soi Fong. The ancient conflict rears its head once again.
Notes: A continuation of A Pirate's Life for Me and Yachiru's Quest for Booty. Thanks so much to [info]shayheyred for the beta!

» Immaculate
Title: Immaculate
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: R
Pairing: Bellatrix/Rodolphus
Warnings: It's not graphic, but... disturbing, I guess.
Summary: The Lestranges would do anything for Lord Voldemort. Anything at all. ~1.6k.
Notes: This may well be the last full-length HP fic I write. It seems appropriate that it's about the same couple as the first one. Thanks so much to [info]lazy_neutrino, both for the beta and for the title!

» And Touch
Finally finished my [info]femgenficathon entry. I don't think I'll be signing up for anything else for a while; I hate not meeting deadlines.

Title: And Touch
Rating: G
Summary: After Harry and Ron die, Hermione must learn to live without them. ~2.5k words.
» Yachiru's Quest for Booty
Title: Yachiru’s Quest for Booty
Fandom: Bleach
Rating: PG, for juvenile innuendo
Summary: Yachiru is a pirate captain, and pirate captains need treasure. A continuation of A Pirate’s Life for Me, in honor of Talk Like A Pirate Day. Gen.
Notes: 9/19: Edited a few things, since I'm a nitpicky perfectionist. Hisagi is now in the Ninth Squad, not the Seventh, the last paragraph has a better flow, and Byakuya's butler is no longer named Jeeves *facepalm*
