Burning fingertips with acid Jan. 7th, 2010 @ 03:57 am
[info]caeliluminar, posting in [info]little_details
I have a character who wants to burn his fingertips off with acid so that he couldn't be recognised by his previously taken fingerprints anymore (he's not the sanest person on Earth). Sulfuric acid would apparently be strong enough to do this, but how would he go about not damaging himself more than necessary (how long to keep the fingertips in the acid, what to do afterwards)? I've read first aid instructions for sulfuric acid burns but they only tell to rinse the burn in a mild soap and water solution and then get help. My character can't involve hospital or other people, although he has lots of time and resources to prepare and is very intelligent despite the situation.

The technology and medicine are about at the level of the early 20th century (mix and match alternate history).

Also, for those experienced with acid burns, how would this feel aside from "hurts like hell"?

And, in case I've missed something obvious, is there a better permanent and dramatic way to completely get rid of your fingerprints?

EDIT. Thanks for the answers, seems like sulfuric acid was overkill. Now I like the idea of open flame better, it creates a nice visual and actually fits better on a symbolic level. Never thought you could lose fingerprints that easily.

All right. I promise to try not to complain about the cold or the weather today.

. . . it's very quiet in here.

Cowboy Bebop question Jan. 6th, 2010 @ 03:50 pm

I should be able to remember this, but I can't seem to, and I don't have copies of the episodes on hand to check it out.

Did they land the actual Bebop on planets regularly, or always leave it in orbit and go down in their individual ships (the Redtail and so forth)? I remember Ed making the Bebop land on Earth, and I think I remember it being on a planet in at least one other episode, but I'm drawing a complete blank.

Because one should document the good and the bad Jan. 6th, 2010 @ 05:57 pm

Today has been a no good, very bad, horrible day. And it’s mostly because of the first hour. It’s amazing that how you start a day off can change the whole tone of the day. First, I overslept and woke up at 7:50 with a start. (I have to leave for work about 8:05 in order to make it in by 9).

And I woke up from one of those dreams* that just leave you feeling hopeless and alone, not a nightmare in the traditional adrenaline racing sense, but a bad dream nonetheless. Also, I think the dream might be an indication that I’m not doing as well as I thought I was with being single. But I’m not really good at meeting people, boys in particular, so that’s probably not going to be changing any time soon.

So I’m late for work, dealing with this rather depressing dream, and then I get into a huge, and I do mean huge fight with my sister. A fight where I proceed to act like a sixteen year old drama queen (what? I can be a drama queen.) So I’m upset and shaky, and not really feeling like dealing with people, cause I’m pretty angry but also ashamed at my behavior, but I can at least try to leave those feelings at the door.

And then I get into work, after breaking every single speed limit on the way to work so I at least get there on time, and nothing I look at is done correctly. I’m relatively new to the job btw, I’ve been here since June as a temp and hired on full time in November, these people have been here much longer and SHOULD TOTALLY KNOW HOW TO DO THIS CRAP. Sorry still a teeny bit peeved.

And while nothing else major happened, it just hasn’t picked up since then. Though texting a good friend helped a bit, and man sometimes I just say things that my friends delight in twisting dirty.

Oh well, I’m going to go home and immerse myself in WoW. Kill some monsters; maybe just farm some herbs or something. Or doing dailies so I can get a new mount. That might make me feel better, a new mount. Maybe I’ll do randoms till I get Oculus and the mount.

I’m laughing at myself right now, because the fictional character I relate to most recently is Codex/Syd from The Guild. You don’t even know- I am so Codex. And I’m torn between laughing and loving this fact and being so embarrassed I could die.

*(A dream I blame on a book I’m reading, I stopped at a part where the heroine (not one I particularly relate to, but apparently that doesn’t matter) finds out she’s being shunned by her community leaving her with a vampire and a pixy as her only real source of community, and for various reasons explained before this shunning, they can’t really truly be there for her. It’s almost enough to make me stop reading the book. Apparently the loss of community and family is the one thing I simply cannot handle right now. I need a group of people around me, which is funny cause I always thought I was this big loner.

THIS IS WHERE ALL YOU HP PEOPLE MUST GO! Jan. 7th, 2010 @ 01:43 am

Loveless Go read it especially if you ship Harry/Draco! But do have a look if not anyway :)

I recced Loveless a few weeks ago. I tried to be reasonable and it turned out boring. I doubt I seduced anybody.

THIS IS how one should do it! It's a genius rec, believe me! It's hilarious, spot on, doesn't mince words, doesn't try to hide the drawbacks of the manga and still perfectly explains why you would love it. And you will! You will! Just three short paragraphs interlaced with a bit of dialogue, and OMG, I'm dying of laughter here.

Bad Roman Epic Poem Jan. 6th, 2010 @ 04:20 pm
[info]oh_meow, posting in [info]little_details
When I was at university, my lecturer mentioned a Roman epic poem that was pretty much the worst surviving piece of classical literature and hilariously bad. I can't for the life of me remember the author or the title, I think it was some sort of attempt at a heroic pastoral, but don't count on that. All my googling for "roman epic" "bad" etc just gives me essays about morality in the Aeneid and so on. Does anyone have any idea what the poem I'm thinking of is?

Pregnancy After 50 Jan. 6th, 2010 @ 09:30 am
[info]klutzy_girl, posting in [info]little_details
Search terms: Pregnancy after 50, women in fifties pregnant, conceiving in the fifties
Setting: Wisteria Lane, 2015

Situation: The character is fifty-three years old. I've looked it up, and there are women who have conceived naturally in their fifties. How likely is it for the fifty-three year old to get pregnant? In canon, there's a pregnant forty-nine year old, so I was wondering about the possibility of the fifty-three year old getting pregnant naturally.

I know there a lot of risks (That I'm thinking of using) in pregnancies for women in their forties and fifties, but I'm hoping the woman can go full term. Would that be possible?

Thank you in advance!

Commonality of casket locks Jan. 6th, 2010 @ 11:40 pm
[info]vertelemming, posting in [info]little_details
Setting: Modern day North America
Googled: "casket lock" "casket lock how common"

This is more of a personal-experience question than anything. I've got two characters temporarily trapped in a casket and am trying to figure out the likelihood of a lock mishap being the cause of their confinement. How common are locks on caskets in North America, and is it at all likely they would snap closed on their own if the lid slammed down?

Note: this is the long-awaited Motherless Child holiday fic. It will continue through Twelfth Night unless it gets completely out of hand, in which case, all bets are off.

Those not familiar with Motherless Child and its sequels/prequels need to know that Severus and Remus are married and have adopted a baby werewolf. It is now the holiday season, and an unexpected controversy has arisen as their families descend for Christmas/Hanukkah/Solstice/Yule/Hogmanay/Festivus….

"We should have gone to my Muggle cousin's for Christmas," Severus murmured. The headache powder was not touching his migraine. "She did ask."

"There are teenagers there, too." Remus stared moodily into the fire.

"Those teenagers haven't suddenly turned Orthodox for love."

"Or New Age. Did you know Mum tried to slip me a gift certificate for a hot stone massage?"

"Ha. Esther wants to know when we're going to schedule John's bris." Severus closed his eyes. "Yule logs and circumcision go together so nicely."

"Your gift certificate is for a wild wheatgrass enema."

Severus winced. "Next year, Gemma's."

"Agreed."
